The untimely death of 27-year-old Anton Yelchin, famous for his role in “Star Trek,” serves as a poignant reminder of the car safety issues our nation faces. Yelchin lost his life when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backward on his steep driveway, tragically pinning him against a brick fence. This devastating incident occurred despite the vehicle being subject to a recall due to a defective electronic gear shift that remained unfixed.
Traditional Strategies and the Shift Towards Car Recalls
Traditionally, car safety strategies relied on two approaches: the 5-Star Safety Rating system, which incentivized carmakers to produce safer vehicles by empowering consumers to make informed choices based on safety ratings, and government regulations that mandated safety features to protect drivers and ensure best practices.
Challenges of Investigating Defects in Modern Vehicles
However, as cars have evolved into sophisticated computers on wheels, managing safety has become increasingly complex. Federal safety regulators now heavily depend on recalls to address safety issues. A recall is initiated when manufacturers, regulators, or both identify a defect that poses unreasonable risks of crashes or injuries. Conducting in-depth risk assessments based on data from consumers, manufacturers, and safety advocates is a crucial part of the recall process. The most recent recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles for theft risk and the engineering investigation of power loss of the Hyunday Ioniq 5 electric vehicle are prime examples.
The Impact of Rising Recall Numbers on Safety
The escalating number of recalls highlights the growing reliance on this approach. In 2010, approximately 23.4 million vehicles were recalled, averaging one recall per 11 registered vehicles. A decade later, this figure climbed to nearly 34.4 million recalls, equivalent to one recall per five registered vehicles. These statistics emphasize the significant impact recalls have on lives, injuries, and damages associated with vehicle safety.
The Need for a New Approach to Car Safety Integration
Prioritizing car safety in technologically advanced vehicles necessitates a fresh perspective. The traditional systems fall short in meeting the safety demands of modern cars. The current recall strategy, comparable to closing the barn door after the horse has escaped, carries a heavy human cost. Drivers like Anton Yelchin deserve a comprehensive system that proactively prioritizes their safety.
